Alan Hinkes successfully climbed his thirteen above 8000 metres peak Dhaulagiri(8164m) on May 17, 2004. Alan Hinkes is attempting Kanchenjunga next year which will make him the first Briton to climb all fourteen 8000m peaks. It is a quantifiable mountaineering achievement, so far less than 12 people in the world have ever completed this grand slam. That is the same number of people who have stood on the moon. At 8046m, Shisha Pangma was his first 8000'er which he climbed in 1987.
"Since that first successful 8000m ascent in 1987, I have gone on to climb another twelve 8000ers, including K2 ("The Savage Mountain"), Nanga Parbat ("The Killer Mountain") and the world's highest mountain, Everest. Of all of the 14 giants, perhaps the most difficult to summit and survive is K2. Certainly for me this is the first prize. Although Everest is the highest mountain I feel it is only the second prize. K2 is nearly as high so has all the same problems of extreme altitude, but it is a much more difficult climb. It is steeper and more technical, has worse weather, more avalanche and rock fall danger and is more remote and arduous to approach," says Alan.
He has labeled his conquest as CHALLENGE 8000. So here is the list of mountain so far he climbed with the blank space against Kangchenjunga which he still has not climbed.
