Guerrilla Trek unveiled

In a bid to promote war tourism, Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) and Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN) and Rukum District Development Committee have jointly unveiled ‘Guerrilla Trek’.
UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, who led decade-long insurgency, unveiled trekking map and guide book of the trek amid a function on October 2.

The 27-trek has been divided into three segments and the shortest segment can be trekking within a week. The trek, which lies in and around Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve, can be started either from Beni of Myagdi, Chaurjahari of Rukum or Holeri of Rolpa. The trek encompasses rural areas in Myagdi and Baglung and western development region and Rukum and Rolpa in mid-western development region.

“Although there are a few hotels and logdes along the route, most of the trekking companies offer camping trek. Locals have also arranged home stay facility for trekkers,” TAAN General Secretary Mohan Lamsal said.

The Guerrilla Trek offers a journey through heartland of post-conflict territory. While on the trek, trekkers can see many caves were rebels hid during insurgency. There are also number of waterfalls and beautiful lakes along the trek. The trek also offers beautiful views of peaks in Dhaulagiri Range.

“Natural resources, bio-diversity and rich culture of ethnic groups are the major attraction of the trail,” Alonzo Lyons, the author of The Guerrilla Trek Guide Book, said.

Speaking at the program, Dahal said the trek could be a unique tourism product. “Political revolution becomes successful only if it triggers economic revolution,” Dahal said, adding that the trek would of historical significance for the new generation. (TAAN)
